He’s right. John Petrucci knows so much about music theory that it’s ridiculous. The band has such creative melodies that they’re such a joy to listen to over and over.

Yeah man , those suspended chords are key to achieving the full colorful spectrum of sound required to be a well rounded rhythym guitaist.
Timber in this case means it is the same key but a different expression of sound, kind of like the same scale but different intervals used and others left out.

you just learn the …
you just learn the major scale and count up the scale at the notes that are the 1st 3rd and 5th. then you take them notes and play them together and you get the chord for that scale
