OK! Time to put out new-found knowledge to work for us in a fun and practical way by playing some music! Well play some simple and fun Reggae grooves that you can easily expand upon to jam with your friends. We start out with a very recognizable bass line that just uses Major Arpeggios to outline a I-IV-V progression in the key of G. Notice how when your hand is anchored in the correct position (Middle finger on the Root) your fingers will fall right into place to play the Arpeggio and create the bass line. We then switch to D and A Minor, change our hand position and play the Arpeggios backwards to create another standard reggae bass line.

Today we’re going to work on proper posture and hand positions when playing guitar (lefties–don’t forget that when I say “right,” that means left for you, and vice versa). Sometimes a simple adjustment to your body helps break through barriers that may be preventing you from getting the sound you desire. We are all shaped a little differently, so make small adjustments that help you physically relax and feel comfortable. Pay special attention to forming good habits right from day one. Only then can you be sure to please your ear with your talent! Additionally, I’ll show you how to easily tune your guitar. You should begin each day’s lesson by setting up your posture and hand positions, and then getting in tune. I’ll also talk a little about song keys. Remember that the goal of this course is to quickly enable you to play guitar and sing along on your own or with your friends. Playing along with your favorite recordings might be difficult at first, but that will surely change as you become more proficient.

What makes a chord a Major or Minor chord? Its the 3rd of course, or the third note of the scale that can be either Major (2 whole steps up from the Root) or Minor (1 whole step and one ½ step up from the Root). This will define the basic tonality or sound of the chords and scales you will be playing. I show you how to find and play both a Major and Minor 3rd. Then I will show you what is meant by the interval of a 10th, which is an Octave above either the Major or Minor 3rd. Playing a 10th will let your ears hear the tonality of Major and Minor, and the hand positions that you will learn will enable you to find the tonality of any key in which you are asked to play.

Today we will learn our first chord, A Major, and a basic strum pattern. You might be surprised to hear that there are songs that use only one chord! While guitar players may differ on the “most correct” way to finger and strum any one chord, you’ll get the most out of this course by following my suggestions and recommendations. Don’t be confused by the white lines on the outer edges of my guitar–it may look like an additional string in certain camera angles. Also, it’s normal for your fingers to hurt at the beginning. This will go away with practice, but that is also why it is important to keep our practice sessions short for now. Let’s start making music!

Now we are going to learn the names and positions of all the notes on your Bass. We will do this by playing a chromatic scale up and down the neck on each of the open strings. This will help you to familiarize yourself with the notes and eventually visualize the entire neck harmonically. Well also be introduced to enharmonics, which is when the same pitch will be named differently according to what key you are in and what direction you are moving on the neck. You will understand the difference between an A sharp and a B flat! We will also get used to using all four fingers to fret the notes and how to keep from having flying fingers so that your left hand will be in a good position to make it easy to get the notes out.
